Abstract

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was used to deposit thin films of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) on stainless steel foils as supporting substrates. Deposition of metal oxide thin films were controlled by changing the EPD parameters of stable colloidal suspensions. Both thin films were deposited by EPD from stable colloidal suspensions which have been purified by membrane dialysis process. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) were used to characterize the metal oxide thin films. Applied voltages and deposition times have significantly influenced on the morphology and microstructures of thin films. The highest mass loading of ZnO thin films from AAS analysis was recorded at lower applied voltage (2V) and shorter deposition time (5 minutes) with 1.133 x 10-5 g cm -2 and 0.507 x 10-5 g cm -2 respectively. Keywords: Electrophoretic deposition (EPD), metal oxide thin films, TiO2, ZnO.
