Abstract

Tajau is a type of earthen jar made from clay with an open mouth, a neck and has an oblong shape structure quite similar to an egg. It has various names and is a highly valued possession of the Iban. One of its values is in the settlement of fines imposed upon the breaking of taboo laws and customs. It is hoped that the younger generation could appreciate their cultural values and take steps to ensure their preservation. This research is carried out with the aim to study the management system for the preservation of the tajau in Iban cultural society. Part of the studies involved the tracing of the history of the tajau and and their uses or functions and cultural values to the Ibans. A total of 7 research locations were visited for this research namely, Sri Aman, Betong, Lubok Antu, Kapit and Sibu (all in Sarawak, Malaysia) and Pontianak and Singkawang (in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia). Observation and interviews are used as study instruments involving as many as 85 respondents. Ten were given structured interviews and 75 unstructured ones. Data are analysed using content analysis. Overall research finding concluded that the Conservation Management Plan espoused here is a system which is suitable for the conservation of tajau. The functions and values of tajau are subjected to various changes brought about by global cultural contacts, religious and cultural beliefs, everyday uses, functions connected with rituals and ceremonies, society social institutions, technological development, education, currency values and societal infrastructure. Meanwhile, the most obvious problem threatening the existence and preservation of tajau is the lack of knowledge of its history and intrinsic values in the Iban society and culture.
