Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of two hydrazone Schiff base ligands (1-2) and their transition metal complexes Co(C40H35N4O6)(3), Ni(C21H18N2O4)(4), Zn(C38H32N4O4)(5), Co(C18H13N2O5)(6), Ni(C19H16N2O5)(7), Zn(C34H28N4O6)(8) are reported in this thesis. Hydrazone Schiff base ligands (1-2) were derived from condensation reaction of 2- hydroxy-1-napthaldehyde with benzhydrazide and 2-furoic acid hydrazide respectively. The ligands (1-2) and their complexes (3-8) were characterized using elemental analysis CHN, UV-Vis, FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 4, 5, 7 and 8 are nonelectrolyte in nature, whereas, complexes 3 and 6 are electrolyte in nature with value of 62 and 78 ohm-1 cm2mol-1 respectively. Spectral studies suggest that hydrazone schiff base ligand 1 acted as a ionic bidentate ligand (NO) towards metal ions, and their metal complexes 3-5 were suggested to demostrate square planar geometry. On the other hand, ligand 2 acted as tridentate (ONO) chelating agents towards transition metal(II) ions.
