Abstract

A study was carried out on traditional knowledge of medicinal plants among Bidayuh community in Kampung Giam and Danu in Padawan district and Kampung Serasot in Bau. Thirty plant species used by villagers as medicinal purposes were collected. 'fhe herbarium specimen were collected and deposited in Herbarium Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (HUM. ). Ten plants from 30 species wcre selected for preliminary phytochemical screening to determine the presence of flavonoid, alkaloid and saponin. The species were selected namely Achidendronjiringa JacL Bll/mea balsamifera CL.) DC., Carica papaya L., Cassia alala L., Cenlelia ((sialica (L.) Urban., Labisia pumi/a Benth., Melasloma malobalhricum L., Morinda cilrifolia L., Piper porphyrophy//um N. E. Br., Psidiull1 guajava L. Eight out from ten species showed positive result on flavonoid screening, seven from ten species showed positive result on alkaloid and four from ten species showed positive result on saponin.
