Abstract

Hydrolysis is a reaction which involves an organic molecule with water. It is a reverse reaction of esterification, either catalyzed by acid or base. In this research, the effect of reaction temperature on acidic hydrolysis is studied. This study was carried out to detennin.e how the reaction temperature will affect the yield of product and therefore to find an optimum temperature of acidic hydrolysis of methyl benzoate. At different temperature (room temperature, sooe, 60°C, 70°C, sooe and reflux), methyl benzoate was stirred with dilute hydrochloric acid to give benzoic acid and methanoL The percentage yield of benzoic acid is the highest at temperature of SO°e. Therefore, the optim um temperature of acidic hydrolysis of methyl benzoate is at SO°e.
