Abstract

Surface roughness plays a critical role in evaluating and measuring the surface quality of the machined a product in manufacturing industry today. Surface roughness is not only a quality indicator but is also the final stage in controlling the machining performance and the operation cost. In this study surface quality of mild steel turning component is measured using stylus technique. The experiment was done by comparing dry cutting method and lowpressure flooding method at different flow rates. The objective of the study is to investigate the cutting condition that will result in smoothest surface finish. The surface roughness also can be seen clearly through microscopic image taken from the experiment. The surface roughness of mild steel was measured at x-axis and y-axis. As overall, the value of roughness taken at the y-axis was lower compared to the value taken at the x-axis. It was because the directions of turning operation towards the workpiece-tool interface. Statistically, a significant difference existed between dry cutting and flooding technique. Flooding technique at Q2=6. OL/hr showed lowest value of roughness among all with 40% improvement of surface roughness compare to dry cutting. It was concluded that the surface roughness of mild steel cutting can be improved at low flow rates of cutting fluid.
