Abstract

This research focuses on the psychoanalysis state of Kuda Kepang Mabuk (KKM) dancers. The purpose of this study is to understand the background of Kesenian Kuda Kepang Sri Kenanga, one of the oldest KKM dance group in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor. This research is also carried out to identify the conscience level of the KKM dancers of the aforementioned group through psychoanalysis. The methodology used in this study is qualitative method whereby the data is collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. According to the concept of the model of human psyche, namely the id. ego, and superego, the psychoanalysis theory applied in KKM is to highlight that the trance the dancers go through contain different levels of consciousness. This study shows that the KKM ritual dance is still strongly rooted in traditional Javanese beliefs and other rituals.
