Abstract

Pollutants in dumpsites may or may not be harmful to people but when they propagate to other parts of the environment, they become lethal resulting into degradation of quality of life. The purpose of the present research is to characterize and model pollutant transport from vegetable waste dumpsites at Gwari market, Yola with the aim of predicting the pollutant transport from these dumpsites. The study utilized field work and laboratory analysis in data collection. Field work was on collection of climate data from the research area, identification of varieties of vegetables at the dumpsites and characterization of physical properties of soils for textural classification. Soils and leachate samples were collected from the contaminated sites and analyzed for the presence of heavy metals and other various pollution parameters. Water samples were equally collected from the source of River Benue in the Republic of Cameroon and from three other locations in River Benue of Yola and analyzed for water quality variables. Parameters analyzed for were: [Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Co, Fe, Mg, Hg, As, Cr, Ni, NO3-, pH, ECE, Turb.
