Abstract

This study is intended to look into the surface water yield of Tapah River at the Tapah/Beratok Water Treatment Plant (WTP) owned by Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Sarawak. There is an existing sharp-crested weir found located at the intake point of Tapah River. The potential of the weir as discharge measurement devie is exploited by measuring on site velocities and depth of water heads. Analyzing further the velocity and head relationships in laboratory settings following the principles of similitude could produce a design chart to enable estimation of river safe yield for Tapah River. It is found that the abstraction rate of Tapah/Beratok WTP is 0.14 m3/s (12.3 MLD). Thus, 40% of increment from the abstraction rate is proposed as the safe yield of Tapah River as it is a normal practice to limit abstraction not lower than 40% of safe yield. With that, the proposed safe yield gives a value of 0.20 m3/s (17.3 MLD). As the river safe yield is greater than the amount of abstraction rate of pump, the water source of Tapah River is able to be sustainably managed given the identified amount of acceptable risk. If the total amount of proposed future withdrawals is greater than the safe yield of the river, then the water is not being used sustainably.
