Abstract

The rising cost of conventional feed ingredients such as fishmeal and soybean meal (SBM), studies on the use of locally available ingredients such as palm kernel shell (PKS) as an alternative was conducted. Two experimental diets were formulated with the replacement of soybean meal by (PKS) at levels 20% and 40%, respectively. Three different diets, include control were fed to Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) fingerlings for nine weeks. As a result, the fingerling fed with control diet recorded the best growth performance where it gave the highest values in most growth parameters such as mean weight gain, mean length increment, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed conversion efficiency (FCE), specific growth rate (SGR) and diet intake among the diets. While, the fingerling fed with diet of 40% PKS gave the poorest growth performances. Statistically, there is no significant difference (P>0.05) between control diet and diet of 20% PKS on growth performances of Nile tilapia. This has indicated that the replacement of SBM by PKS up to 20% in diet has no any deleterious effect on the growth of tilapia. Therefore, diet of 20% PKS is proposed as a cost effective aquafeed, where it is account only RM 2.06 per kilo feed price and has been estimated can saved up to about 28% in feed cost of production of one kilogram fish weight gain as compared to commercial diet
