Abstract

The effects of copper, zinc, and iron on the growth of Graci/aria sp. were studied in vitro. The Graci/aria sp. tissues were cultured under five different concentrations (OIlM, 0.1 J.1M, 0.5J.1M, 10.0J.1M and 50.0pM) of these metals. The growth rate and chlorophyll a concentration of the algae were measured weekly during a 21 days cultivation. Results showed that, there were significant difference between different concentrations of various trace metal towards alga mean growth rate and mean chlorophyll a concentration. The sensitivity of the trace metal was generally lower at low concentrations of the various trace metal. A reduction in the mean growth rate of Graci/aria sp. was found for high concentration (50.0J.1M) of these trace metals. In conclusion, this is a simple, sensitivity and reproducible test method for assessing the toxicity of copper, zinc and iron in brackish and marine environments.
