Abstract
The objectives of this study were to identify Piper spp. that wen~ used in the research, prepare their baucers specimens, prepare plant extractants from the leaf. stem and fruit of Piper spp. and to identify Piper spp. that have an antiuiral activity againts Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). In this research, extractants from Piper nigrum and Piper betel were tested for the antiviral reaction. Each species was collected from two separate locations. P. nigrum was collected from Roban and Sarikei whereas P. betel was collected from Sarikei and Saratok. Sarawak. The extractants of P. betel were taken from the leaf and stem. The extractants of P. nigrum were taken from the leaf. stem and fruit. The cell culture used in this investigation was a cell line from porcine kidney fibroblasts. The protocol of plaque assay was used for the antiviral screening test. F'ruit extractants of P. nigrum taken from Roban showed antiviral activity against JEV, but the extractants from the stem of P. nigrum from Roban, stem and fruit of P. nigrum from Sarikei, stem of P. brtrl from Sarikei. leaf and stem of P, betel from Saratok had no antiviral activities. Leaf extractants of P. betel from Sarikei had cytotoxic effect only. The extractant of leaf of P. nigrum from Sarikei had cytotoxic effect and no antiviral activity.
